Residents of the Tladi informal settlement said they were looking forward to finally having a stable electricity supply.

This follows the demolition of a house in the area, which officials said was delaying the installation of a transformer.

The City of Johannesburg’s Human Settlements Department confirmed that it could finally start the electrification work.

More than 150 residents are expected to benefit from the Informal Settlement Upgrade Programme, which includes the provision of electricity.

Joburg MMC for Human Settlements, Mlungisi Mabaso, warned those who might obstruct public works.

"If you stand in the way of our development, we are going to deal with you one way or the other. We cannot allow one person to hinder the work that we are doing," said Mabaso.

Resident Thandi Tshabalala said the community felt their dignity had been restored.

"We are happy that after all these years, we can finally get electricity. The house was also obstructing the road; ambulances could not go in and police vehicles could not pass," she said.

The department said it anticipated the project would be complete in September.
