The Democratic Alliance (DA) has elected Luyolo Mphithi as its new Johannesburg regional chairperson, unseating incumbent Wendy Alexander.

Mphithi, a member of Parliament (MP) and former DA youth leader, emerged victorious at the party’s regional elective conference held at the Prison Break Market on Saturday afternoon.

Nine key leadership positions were up for grabs.

Nonhlanhla Sifumba secured the role of deputy chairperson, defeating Gerhard Jacobus.

Mphithi has set his agenda, pledging to grow the party’s support in townships and mobilise enough backing to see Helen Zille elected as Johannesburg mayor.

He also issued a stark warning, saying the city cannot afford another term under African National Congress (ANC) leadership.
