Five suspected female drug mules arrested at OR Tambo International Airport are due to appear in court on Tuesday.
Police Spokesperson Amanda van Wyk said the five South Africans were intercepted on Saturday.
"Upon searching them, we were able to find drugs concealed on their bodies. In their sneakers, in underwear and also their private parts."
Van Wyk said their investigations will remain ongoing so that they can also trace and arrest the kingpins. "Usually when we're dealing with such a crime, they are part of a bigger network."
She said that the airport is a gateway to other parts of the country as well as other countries, and they are working closely with the Airports Company of South Africa to stamp out the transport of drugs.
"Earlier this month, we made another successful drug bust at that very same airport. We seized R2.8-million worth of drugs at the airport. That was during a routine day-to-day operation where we discovered crystal meth at a cargo warehouse. It was destined to go to the Philippines."
