From the vibrant streets of Soweto to the commanding stages across the globe, Somizi Mhlongo has become a cultural phenomenon, redefining entertainment and self-expression for almost 50 years.

Speaking to 947’s Thando Thabethe and Msizi James, he shared that growing up in a poverty-stricken neighbourhood, his parents instilled in him a sense of self-worth and encouraged him to pursue his passions.

He recounted his early days as a child actor, landing his first role at 12, and how his parents’ unwavering support gave him the confidence to take risks.

“My parents gave me so much confidence to walk into a room and know that that part is mine.”

Mhlongo added that the level of support was also important when he was navigating challenges with his identity and self-expression, when it wasn’t always easy to be himself.

"I never felt like there was something wrong with me... I think the way my parents raised me needs to be studied because I never felt like when people ask me, ‘When did you come out?’ Come out of what? I've always been me.

“[They] never for once made me feel that there's something wrong with me, or there's anything wrong, or you can't act like this in front of people.”
