The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality confirmed that the demonstrations quickly escalated, resulting in widespread looting and significant damage to both private and public property.
Premier Mabuyane expressed serious concern over the destruction in downtown KuGompo City, where angry protesters set several vehicles on fire and targeted local businesses. He confirmed that law enforcement agencies have been deployed to stabilise the affected areas and ensure the safety of residents, businesses, and commuters.
Provincial spokesperson Sonwabo Mbananga released a statement emphasising the government's stance on the unrest:
"Premier Mabuyane and the Eastern Cape Provincial Government unequivocally condemn all acts of violence, criminality, and lawlessness. South Africa remains a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law."
The protesters have since dispersed after handing over a formal memorandum to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA).
