There are growing concerns about the knock-on impact of these steep hikes, especially on low- and-middle-income households, as well as rising food prices.

The increases come amid global energy pressures linked to tensions involving Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil and gas shipping route.

Although the government has cut the fuel levy by R3 per litre, these Johannesburg motorists have told EWN that they are still feeling the strain.

“It is going to affect all pockets... but it definitely affects the middle class and the lower-income people. So, our government still has to probably look into that and whether we can like work from home and stuff,” said one motorist.

“It's a downright impact cost of the war that's being passed on to the people,” said another.

“It's really a bad thing. Let's hope maybe something can be done,” another said.
