Bulgarian fugitive wanted by Interpol, Stanislav Stamenov, is expected to learn on Thursday whether he will be released from custody.

Final arguments in his bail application are set to be heard at the Wynberg Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Stamenov was arrested in Cape Town towards the end of February, following the issuing of an Interpol Red Notice.

The 41-year-old is fighting extradition to Romania, where he is due to serve a 16-year sentence for drug trafficking.

The convicted Bulgarian drug trafficker is applying for bail in a bid to secure his release.

The Wynberg Magistrates Court has already dismissed Stamenov’s claim that his arrest, based on an Interpol Red Notice, was unlawful.

The court found sufficient evidence that he committed an extraditable offence in Romania.

Stamenov’s lawyer, William Booth, maintains that his client is not a flight risk and should be granted bail.

However, the State is opposing his release, arguing that he obtained South African residency fraudulently and could flee the country.
