Police in the Eastern Cape have rearrested one of the eight detainees who escaped from Afsondering police station in Maluti at the weekend.

Officers said the remaining seven escapees, facing charges relating to murder, rape, assault, and crimen injuria, are still on the run.

Authorities warn the public not to attempt apprehension and has advised anyone with information to contact the police immediately.

The province’s police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana said Siphelele Mkhulisi, wanted for murder, was found asleep at his aunt’s home in Matatiele.

“Acting on intelligence received by a task team member that Mkhulisi was asleep at his aunt’s residence in the Masakala Location in Matatiele, the task team, comprising Vispol, K9, and Detectives, tactically approached the premises. The suspect was found still asleep and was arrested without incident.”
