Some Democratic Alliance (DA) leaders currently serving in Cabinet said they are not scared of losing their jobs when the party’s new national leadership is elected.

The DA federal congress is being held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand this weekend.

Among other things, the congress serves as an elective conference where a new leadership slate will be elected.

With John Steenhuisen and Helen Zille not running for re-election, there are guaranteed new faces in the DA’s leadership structure.

There have been some suggestions that the new leadership might want to re-look the 12 ministers and deputy ministers deployed to serve the party in the Government of National Unity (GNU).

Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Willie Aucamp said he’s confident he will keep his job long after the congress.

“You must remember that ministers from the DA are not only appointed by the leader, they are appointed by the federal executive of the party. So, the leader or anybody else can make a suggestion, but that has to be implemented by the federal executive. I don’t think there will be changes. I think that the DA ministers in government have shown that they are running their portfolios excellently.”

Aucamp’s sentiments were also echoed by Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber, who told EWN that the cohort of DA members deployed to the GNU have done an exceptional job.

Voting for the new DA leadership will take place on Sunday morning.
