A truck driver has been arrested and a large consignment of explosives seized during a joint operation at the Beitbridge border post.

According to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, the truck was intercepted on Friday near Musina by a multidisciplinary team.

A search of the vehicle uncovered thousands of blasting cartridges, connector capsules and detonator fuse reels, with the total value of the explosives and truck estimated at nearly R2.8 million.

Hawks' spokesperson Avela Fumba says the 42-year-old truck driver tried to evade arrest but was quickly apprehended.

"This is not just an arrest, but it is a warning. Criminals must understand that our borders are not open doors for danger. What was intercepted here could have destroyed lives, families and communities. Every explosive taken off the streets is a life saved.”

The suspect is due to appear in the Musina district magistrate's court on Monday, facing charges including the possession of explosives.
