The Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Congress has passed a policy resolution to legalise “Baby Savers”.
These are organisations that provide safe places where parents can leave their babies without being asked any questions.
The organisations say they provide a safe alternative to baby abandonment, but the government remains at odds with them.
The matter was debated at the DA federal congress at the Gallagher convention centre in Midrand.
A journal article recently published in the South African medical journal says thousands of babies in South Africa are abandoned under unsafe conditions, with two out of three babies found dead.

DA member and Deputy Minister of Trade Alexandra Abrahams says that’s the reason she proposed her policy titled "Legalisation of safe relinquishment, baby savers and safe havens".
Abrahams says government must regulate and not criminalise baby savers.
With the DA federal congress having passed the policy resolution, Abrahams says her next fight is taking the matter to parliament.
