Four suspects linked to a series of fatal shootings in Gugulethu, Cape Town, have been taken into custody.

The alleged gunmen, aged between 24 and 30, were apprehended earlier on Friday within the township.

The group is accused of murdering a man and a woman in the New Cross area last month.

Reports indicate the victims had been visiting a local residence for a social gathering at the time of the attack.

The violence escalated this past Monday when three more people were shot and killed in proximity to the site of the initial double murder.

Police spokesperson André Traut confirmed that the arrests mark a significant breakthrough in the case.

"These arrests demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crime are brought to justice," Traut stated. "The investigation remains ongoing."

Authorities continue to investigate whether the group is linked to other violent incidents in the area.
