While Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia admits that the policing structure in the country is currently unstable, he believes President Cyril Ramaphosa made the right decision to suspend national police commissioner Fannie Masemola.
Ramaphosa suspended Masemola on Friday after he was charged with contravention of the Public Finance Management Act in the Pretoria Magistrates Court earlier this week.
While the matter is before the court Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane will act as national commissioner of police in Masemola's place.
Speaking on the Midday Show with Mandy Wiener, Cachalia said appointing an acting commissioner makes sense.
"I don't think, given the manner in which national commissioner Masemola has had to in effect step down would justify making a long-term decision right now."
Cachalia said decisions are being made to deal with "Consequence management" in the country.
"So there are position that we can't fill. Once people have been suspended there are vacancies and one of the tasks I have with the newly appointed acting national commissioner is to look at the resourcing issues."
