President Ramaphosa says corruption erodes SA's democratic gains

President Cyril Ramaphosa has used his Freedom Day address to speak against the danger of corruption.

The president said that corruption erodes the country’s democratic gains.

He was speaking at the Dr Rantlai Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein, where the government is hosting this year’s Freedom Day rally. 

Ramaphosa said that many gains have been made by the democratic government; however, more work still needs to be done.

While access to electricity and water has been extended to more South Africans since Apartheid, the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality persists.

Ramaphosa said that some of these challenges are further entrenched by corruption.

“It is to advance human dignity that we continue to act without fear or favour against those who undermine the promise of our freedom. Every rand that is stolen is an attack on our democracy. Every project that is not complete is a betrayal of a community.”

The president said that initiatives like the Madlanga Commission are playing a critical role in exposing the shortfalls in our government institutions.
