Cape Talk's Clarence Ford chats to Lindsey Joseph, Group Talent Solutions Head at Shoprite Holdings.

Listen to their conversation in the audio clip below:

Shoprite is offering ambitious young South Africans more than just a bursary...it’s a full career launchpad.

With applications now open until 30 September, the retailer is investing in students pursuing degrees in fields like accounting (CA stream), retail business management, supply chain and logistics, biological and agricultural sciences, and food sciences.

Successful applicants don’t just get funding, they’re guaranteed employment after graduation, complete with mentorship, rotation through departments, and long-term career growth.

"That's the great thing about this programme; you're guaranteed employment afterwards."

The bursary package includes tuition, on-campus accommodation, a grocery allowance, and even support toward getting a driver’s licence, all designed to ease the financial burden and help students focus on their studies.

Shoprite has already invested over R15 million in bursaries for more than 630 students in the past three years.

Joseph says the retailer views this initiative not just as talent development, but as a social responsibility amid soaring youth unemployment.

"...it's an essential part of our commitment to uplift communities and enabling sustainable livelihoods for young South Africans."

"It's essentially about having a passion for retail."
