JOHANNESBURG - The mother accused of failing to report the sexual assault of her daughter will now face two additional charges of murder and child abuse, before the Protea Magistrate's Court.
The woman from Eldorado Park in Soweto appeared in court on Monday alongside her husband, who has been accused of raping and murdering their daughter.
Her husband is also accused of abusing their son after he allegedly beat him up and broke his arm.
The couple appeared together in the dock today after the court joined their dockets.
This comes after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) took another look into a previous assault case where her husband allegedly physically abused their two-year-old son.
He’s currently facing five charges related to crimes committed on his late daughter, which include murder, rape, compelled rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and child abuse.
NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjondodwane explained, "The question we asked we asked ourselves as the NPA was whether or not the actions of the father should be imputed on the mother as well in an attempt to hold them accountable and criminally liable. So the view we have taken is that indeed the mother should be charged with murder and child abuse.
On Monday, the couple abandoned their bail applications and will remain in custody until October 9th while investigations continue.
