JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)  has revealed that the man accused of raping and murdering his four-year-old daughter has a previous assault case.

The Eldorado Park man is also accused of physically abusing his two-year-old son and allegedly breaking his arm.

He appeared before the Protea Magistrates Court alongside his wife on Monday, facing rape, assault, child abuse and murder charges.

The wife allegedly knew about her husband’s actions but failed to report him to the police.

The alleged murderer’s wife had opened an assault case against him in March but later withdrew it for undisclosed reasons.

The NPA said it is looking into the case she withdrew to determine if there was of pattern of abuse against the children.

The couple appeared today for a case related to their daughter, who died from her injuries after allegedly being beaten by her father two weeks ago.

The mother of the child was crying in the dock during the couple’s court appearance.

NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonodwana said, "As the NPA, we are following up on information and as soon as we have finalised the investigation in respect of that docket, which we are told was opened around March this year, one of assault in a domestic violence-related sphere."

The two-year-old boy, who was allegedly also abused, is currently in the care of authorities.

The couple has abandoned bail.
