Acclaimed South African jazz musician Vuma Levin is on an album release tour with the group In Motion for their project, ‘Allegories’.

The album was launched just two days ago and is a storytelling collaboration linking different worlds and genres, from the Renaissance to indigenous African music.

'The project seeks to establish a creative dialogue between folkloric music from Switzerland and South Africa, focusing on the period prior to and during the early stages of colonialism.'

The group performs at Jazz in the Native Yards on Sunday afternoon.

Sara-Jayne talks to Levin and Switzerland's Théo Duboule, also a guitarist.

"We all wrote songs for the album, so there's a blend of different influences which I think in the end comes together very coherently."
Théo Duboule, In Motion

"Traditional indigenous music has a very large improvisational component, and that's a point of resonance... so with us there's a balance between composed components and the improvised components."
Vuma Levin, In Motion

"We're all jazz musicians, so we share this love and this interest in improvisation. The fact that we're composing live and improvising brings everything together, using different elements of the different genres."
Théo Duboule, In Motion

The performance starts at 3 pm on Sunday afternoon.

Tickets are available on Quicket.
