Fire that gutted homes in Vrygrond contained, relief efforts begin

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse on Monday said firefighters extinguished a blaze that destroyed several structures in Vrygrond.

Carelse said initial estimates indicated that several dozen structures had been affected.

“At this stage, no injuries or fatalities have been reported, and the cause of the fire is unknown,” said Carelse.

Gift of the Givers spokesperson Ali Sablay said relief teams were on the ground to assist those affected.

“Once the fire site has been declared safe by emergency services, Gift of the Givers will immediately activate humanitarian assistance, including the provision of hot meals and bottled water to affected residents,” said Sablay.
