More than 50% of South African high schools, mostly in under-resourced areas, no longer offer subjects such as Pure Mathematics and Life Sciences.
That's why Ma Se Kind is stepping in to raise future teachers, restoring classrooms, and rebuilding communities, one learner at a time.
The project's mission is to train and employ interested and passionate young adults from the Cape Flats as teachers.
Individuals involved in this project reside on the Cape Flats, so they've seen the dire need for a project like this first-hand, says le Roux.
The project aims to provide bursaries, hands-on training, and placement for aspiring teachers in under-resourced schools, bringing urgent relief to overburdened teachers and hope to the next generation of learners.
By providing them with the education and support needed to earn a teaching degree, they help them study with Two Oceans Academy.
After their studies, they'll be placed as student teachers in under-resourced schools to help overwhelmed teachers who are often tied down with admin while encouraging a love for Math and reading in classrooms, explains le Roux.
"A teacher is someone who can reach more than 40 kids at one time and make a positive impact and change." That's why the organisation focuses on upskilling through teaching, explains le Roux.
Ma Se Kind aims to place 120 new teachers in underserved schools over four years, starting with 30 in 2026.
"In four years from now, we will have little engineers, doctors and nurses coming from the Cape Flats area... Pure Math isn't a subject anymore in schools."
- Robertha le Roux, Ma Se Kind Education Project NPC
"We want to give these youngsters everything they need to become a success and become the best teachers for our future. This is about every child achieving their dreams... be it a teacher, doctor, pilot... we need to make sure our children have a fighting chance."
