Rassie Erasmus 'so proud' of Springboks Women for making it to Rugby World Cup quarterfinals

History was made in South African rugby on Sunday, 31 August, as the Springbok Women secured their place in the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals for the first time, defeating higher-ranked Italy in a dramatic clash in York.

In a nail-biting encounter, the women in green and gold triumphed 29-24, claiming their first win over Italy.

South Africa came out firing, doing what they do best: scrumming with power and precision from the very first minute. It was No. 8 Aseza Hele, known for her unstoppable drives, who broke through for the opening try, setting the tone for a memorable performance.

"This is massive!" said Player of the Match Libbie Van Rensburg.

"We spoke about changing history in South Africa for women's rugby, and we did that. Every single lady who is in the squad is part of making history, and I think we really made South Africa proud."

"This is unreal. It's so emotional," said head coach Swys de Bruin after the match.

"We’ve never reached the quarters, and we’ve never beaten Italy before. The nation is right behind these girls — it’s in our blood. We love this game, and we look up to our men’s teams, the Sevens, and the under-20s. It was time we caught up. Our girls were absolutely fantastic."

South Africa women's rugby captain Nolusindiso Booi labelled the win 'magic' and dedicated the historic win to those who came before her.

Our men's coach, Rassie Erasmus, gave them a shoutout on X.
