Tech expert Arthur Goldstuck reports from the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, reviewing Samsung's newly unveiled Galaxy S26 range.
"Between the S23 and the S25, there was never really a good reason to upgrade because the improvements in each successive smartphone were just incremental, and you were fine with your previous edition. But now the S26 has pushed the boundaries a lot further.
"So, for the last three years, the main lens on these phones' cameras was a 200 megapixel lens, and each year you expect it to be improved, and it doesn't; it's still the same lens.
But now the S26 Ultra, which is the flagship phone, has taken that lens and pushed the aperture, that's what lets the light into the camera."
The lens lets in 30% more light. "And that is the number to me that sums up why the new S26 Ultra is such a major leap forward and a good reason to upgrade."
Goldstuck says the Ultra starts at R31 000. "But the basic S26 starts at R21 000, and that's essentially the upper-end of the mid-range of smartphones. "
