In a bid to support army deployment in gang-riddled provinces, National Treasury has proposed increasing the budget for peace and security by R21 billion over the next three years.
This would raise the total allocation for peace and security from the current R268 billion to R291 billion.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana made the announcement during his budget speech on Wednesday.
The move follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement in his State Of The Nation Address (SONA) that soldiers would be brought in to bolster crime-fighting efforts.
Godongwana broke down the proposed financial boost.
"R2.7 billion is added to defence over the medium term to improve operations, including to maintain the South African air force’s fighter capability. In addition, we have allocated R1 billion to the police service, and another r1 billion to the SANDF, through the CARA fund for the fight against organised crime."
