WATCH: "The other side of the story will be told." AKA's dad opens up about son's childhood and relationships

In just two days (10 February), it will mark a year since rapper Kiernan "AKA" Forbes's was shot dead at close range as he left Wish restaurant in Durban on 10 February 2023.

Since the Forbes' family's tragic loss, they have been openly honouring their son's memory. 

The late rapper's dad, Tony Forbes continues the honesty as he speaks to Hazel Kotu on her YouTube channel ‘Within With Hazel’ in a two hour interview.

In the interview, Forbes got candid about AKA's murder, childhood and his love life.

On Kiernan's childhood, Forbes remembers his son as a good natured child who took after both his mom and dad.

"As a child he was very good natured... he didn't have a malicious bone in his body. He was not someone who would be fighting but I think the Kiernan of later years was a bit different and a bit evolved and became very outspoken, as a child he was not like that. He was a very sensitive soul. He was foolish but he was also wise and I think he got that from his mother."

Forbes also says that Jozi was AKA's home despite being born in The Mother City...

"Kiernan loved Cape Town and it was his spiritual home but Joburg was definitely his town. The big smoke is where it happened."

On Kiernan's relationships... Mr Forbes says that all Kiernan's partners were welcomed.

"It's not for me to choose for my children who their partners are - that was his choice."

AKA's dad also spoke about Kiernan's first girlfriend, "Black Coffee's ex-wife."

"I have no animosity towards any of them. Mbali was his first girlfriend - Black Coffee's ex-girlfriend, I thought Mbali was going to be my daughter-in-law. I loved Mbali, I still love Mbali, she's talented... beautiful... I love her just as I love Nadia."

Mr Forbes was also candid about AKA's relationship with the late Anele Tembe, saying, "I'm not sure that they were good for each other."

"Kiernan and Anele were at different stages of their lives. My personal view... and I don't speak for anyone else, is that I'm not sure that they were good for each other. We've never doubted Kiernan. We've never doubted... did he push her? The inference of these stories that came out subsequently as Kiernan being abusive - the inference was that he killed her."

Forbes revealed that there is an inquest into Tembe's death which will be investigated next year so he can't say much now.

"All I can say is there is a context, if you look at the video where he breaks down the door - it doesn't show what happened before that. It doesn't show what happened after that. What's been put in the public domain has been very one-sided."

Forbes adds that there were incidents that AKA chose to hide from the public which will be revealed "in time" during the inquest...

"There were other incidents, there were pictures of Kiernan with bruises under his eye for example - did that make the papers? With time, the other side of the story will be told as part of the inquest into her death."
