Gauteng tourism revenue soars to over R30 billion this year
Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Ms Tasneem Motara presented the latest tourism performance statistics for Gauteng and discussed further the impact of signature events hosted in the province.
The Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) has committed through its annual performance plan for 2023 - 2024 ambitious and tourism recovery-driven targets. Where they have committed to generate R13billion from total foreign direct tourism spend, welcome 1.6million international arrivals, drive 4 million total direct domestic trips, and generate R10.8 billion from total direct domestic spend.
Similarly, they have further committed to improving the rand value and total revenue accrued to SMMEs out of hosted events in the province while contributing to the attainment of 3500 job opportunities out of our aggregated work and projects.
The Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) is pleased to confirm that they are on track, with more than 2.6 million in international arrivals already recorded by Gauteng out of a target of 1.605 million. They have also surpassed their R13 billion total foreign direct spend, with the current figure standing at R30 billion.
"While Gauteng remains the net exporter of domestic travel, the province has still managed to achieve 5.6 million domestic trips and recorded over 2,700 job opportunities out of our hosted events and tourism development projects." Ms Tasneem Motara, Gauteng MEC - Economic Development
The Gauteng tourism, trade, and investment facilitation strategy is focused on prioritising Africa as the main market, followed by other source markets such as the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, China, India, the Middle East, and Brazil. It is encouraging to see that Africa continues to lead in terms of international arrivals to the country.
In a span of just six months, from April to September 2023, the Gauteng province has not only achieved 70.9% of its annual target for tourist arrivals but has also recorded an impressive performance on tourism revenue. In the overall, this represents 98.2% of the Total Foreign Direct Spend (TFDS) target for the fiscal year ending March 2024. This outstanding performance indicates that Gauteng is well on its way to surpassing its tourism objectives before the end of the fiscal year, marking a significant triumph for the province.
All these are not just random events and numbers. They are job opportunities, numbers of the actual beneficiaries of their efforts, brings bread to the table of families, and some of them had nearly lost hope. These are numbers and platforms of hope, economic development catalysts, a window to a transformative and growing events industry, and massive net contributors to our GDP and Growing Gauteng Together vision.
The Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) remain focused towards the attainment of our vision of building a competitive and resilient Convention’s City Region as part of the blocks that shape the Gauteng, we all want.
