WC Mobility MEC issues stern warning to 'criminal elements in taxi industry who cause mayhem'

CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Mobility MEC Ricardo Mackenzie has confirmed that negotiations between taxi associations Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA) are underway.

This follows violent clashes between CATA and CODETA along the Tokai route near the Blue Route Mall on Friday.

Police said officers responded to a complaint on Tokai Road. Upon arrival, they saw a group of men rushing towards parked minibus taxis opposite the mall and vandalising the vehicles.

While the situation has since calmed down, Mackenzie issued a stern warning against those involved:
 
"For those individuals, the criminal elements in the minibus taxi industry who want to cause mayhem, the full might of the law will come down on them," he said.  

"There will be consequences on this route if stability and peace do not continue on this route."
