The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has indicated its readiness to proceed with the case involving 12 senior police officers who were arrested on Tuesday night.

The officials were nabbed during an operation by the Investigative Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC).

It's alleged the suspects played a role in helping suspected criminal Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala secure an irregular R360 million South African Police Service (SAPS) tender.

A year later, the tender awarded to Medicare24 was cancelled following an internal audit report that found irregularities in the bidding process.

The Madlanga Commission has heard evidence of how senior police officials assisted Matlala to score the tender in exchange for kickbacks.

Special Investigating Unit (SIU) spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said, “We started investigating this thing in 2024 as IDAC, and now we've come to the point where we've got all the evidence we needed.

“That's why we effected the arrest yesterday, and we are court-ready. Obviously, there are processes in court that will take their own course, but we are ready to take this forward at any time.”
