JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have arrested a suspect believed to be the mastermind behind blue light robberies on freeways in the province.
Officials said the suspect was arrested at his home in Dawn Park, Ekurhuleni on Monday morning during a takedown operation with other law enforcement officers.
During the operation, the suspect was found in possession of blue lights, a traffic police uniform and a hijacked vehicle.
In recent months, there has been an increase in blue light robberies in the province, with Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, along with her bodyguards, getting robbed on the N3 in November.
Spokesperson Mavela Masondo said more arrests are expected.
"The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of hijacked motor vehicle, and possession of ammunition, amongst other charges."
