The Eerste River/Stellenbosch lines are operational again.

Trains to and from Stellenbosch have been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting roughly 60 000 commuters.

The infrastructure was severely damaged during and after the lockdown, which Metrorail has been fixing over the past few months.

The line is back with a limited service, meaning a train will come every half an hour, or every hour.

“We had some teething problems. Finally, my team and I have been able to clear all of those.”

According to Maseko, the vandalism was so severe in the Western Cape that only 14 of the 121 train stations were operational after the hard lockdown.

Metrorail has since recovered 101 of those stations.
