Crime statistics show abductions are disturbingly common.

John Perlman speaks with Lizette Lancaster, Project Manager: Crime and Justice Information and Analysis Hub at the Institute for Security Studies.

Listen to the interview in the audio below.

Crime statistics from October to December last year, show an average of 50 abductions every day across the country.

While Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal are kidnapping hotspots, other provinces aren't immune to this crime.

Lancaster says most abductions are ‘express kidnappings’, which happen during hijacks and robberies.

“They make up about 60% of all kidnappings.”

She added that if we focused on kidnappings related to other crimes, we'd see a massive reduction in these alarming statistics.
