DURBAN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) said that being able to host a rally at the Fountains Currie Stadium in Durban was a sign that the organisation was breaking new ground.

This was as thousands began to gather on Saturday for the party's KwaZulu-Natal Rescue South Africa tour campaign.

One hundred and fifty buses have been secured to transport around 10,000 party supporters to the stadium, where leader John Steenhuisen will deliver a keynote address around midday.

Having any confidence in a province as complicated as KwaZulu-Natal ahead of the elections is a tall order. This, as even bigger parties in the province like the African National Congress (ANC) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) put up a fierce battle to increase support.

However, the DA firmly believes voters will ensure it becomes part of the government that emerges when the dust settles.

Its KwaZulu-Natal premier candidate, Chris Pappas, said the ground was fertile for change.

"There's a feeling that people believe in change, which is fantastic. We're going to places that we've never been to before, being welcomed in overwhelming numbers in places we weren't welcome before. There's an optimism around these elections that people know, there's some sort of change happening."

Now Pappas will get an opportunity to deliver that message to the crowd later on Saturday, while Steenhuisen will share his vision of the way forward for the country.
