President Cyril Ramaphosa has thrown Minister Senzo Mchunu under the bus in his submission to Parliament, denying that he supported his decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) immediately.
Ramaphosa said he told Mchunu during a meeting in February 2025 that the directive to disband the PKTT was a decision for National Commissioner Fannie Masemola to make, because this was within his powers.
Ramaphosa was responding to written questions from members of the ad hoc committee investigating allegations of police corruption, who had questioned him about Mchunu’s decision.

President Ramaphosa stated in his affidavit that he was “dissatisfied” with Mchunu’s decision to disband the PKTT without informing him.
Mchunu had testified before the committee in 2025 that he informed Ramaphosa about the decision and the president agreed with him.
But Ramaphosa said he met Mchunu in February, where he "conveyed his dissatisfaction" at not having been consulted prior to this decision being taken.
He said he informed Mchunu that he wanted to be kept abreast of any further decisions that would impact the work being done in relation to political killings.
Ramaphosa stated that he would not ordinarily take part in administrative steps to establish the PKTT, but he was never informed of any illegality during its tenure.
He further said he came to know of Mchunu's views about the PKTT only when he appeared before the ad hoc committee and the Madlanga Commission.
