Latest Milli Vanilli movie partly filmed in Cape Town is 'really a South African movie'

Crystal Orderson speaks to Actor Ashley Dowds who plays 'Benny Dorn' in 'Girl You Know It's True: Milli Vanilli Biopic' about the film, partly filmed in Cape Town.

Milli Vanilli fans, there's a new film that might just be up your alley.

Milli Vanilli duo, Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan shot to fame in the late 1980's with number one hits but their success was short-lived as they quickly became one of the biggest scandals in pop music history.

They were the first music duo to have had their Grammy-award stripped away from them for lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks - leading to their demise, infamy and several biopics about their careers.

The latest biopic about the singers is called, 'Girl You Know It's True: Milli Vanilli biopic' and features parts of Cape Town.

The film is currently playing at Ster-Kinekor cinemas.

"This is a thrill for us, it's really a South African movie and it's going to make a big impact."
- Ashley Dowds, Actor

The film follows the meteoric rise of the dancers and the scandal attached to their name.

It also explores the lip syncing debacle and the story of two black front men who were exploited by the music industry.

"People loved Milli Vanilli. It's the story of two black front men who are exploited by the music industry... the whole machine... and it's these two that take the fall."
- Ashley Dowds, Actor
"It's a very sad tumble from fame to nothing... and less than nothing... It's a tragedy."
- Ashley Dowds, Actor
"So what?... is one way of seeing it... so what if they were lip syncing? Many other singers did the same thing at the time with their own music when they couldn't keep up with the dances on stage... the only thing about Milli Vanilli that was different is that it wasn't their voices... they were lip syncing to session musicians."
- Ashley Dowds, Actor
