DA 'disappointed' by election of Dada Morero as Joburg Mayor

Morero was elected mayor with the backing of the Economic Freedom Fighters, ActionSA, Patriotic Alliance and minority parties on Friday.

JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg says it is appalled and disappointed by the election of the African National Congress (ANC)’s Dada Morero as mayor.
 
Morero was elected mayor with the backing of the Economic Freedom Fighters, ActionSA, Patriotic Alliance and minority parties on Friday.

He won the mayoral race against DA caucus leader, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, after her party lost the support of ActionSA in council.
 
Shortly after the DA’s motion to dissolve council was rejected during Friday's sitting, Kayser-Echeozonjoku accepted a nomination to contest the mayoral position.
 
While the DA has lost the support of most of its political allies, she says her decision to run for mayor was anchored on principle.
 
"We then said okay, we're offering another solution and that is to put forward a candidate and allow parties in this chamber to choose good governance, and they chose corruption, decay, decline and they’ve just cemented the decay of the city."
 
She says she doesn't have confidence in the new administration of the city.
 
"These are the very same people who presided over the decline of the city."
 
Morero is the 9th Joburg mayor since 2016.
