JOHANNESBURG - With her win for Best African Actress for her portrayal of Nandi on Shaka ilembe, Nomzamo Mbatha, an actor from Durban, has been making waves.Β

After securing her first significant international role in Eddie Murphy's Coming 2 America, she's now also received an award at the Septimius Award in 2024.

Mbatha called Shaka Ilembe "a most life-changing project and life-altering experience" in response to the news that Bomb Productions' executive producer, Desiree Markgraaff, shared on social media.Β

Upon its premiere on 18 June 2023, Mzansi Magic received much-needed support for the historical drama based on the story of Shaka Zulu, which might make it the biggest local blockbuster of 2023.

Produced by Bomb Productions, the 12-episode historical drama is set in the 1700s and explores the life of the titular King Shaka Zulu, a well-known African ruler, from his childhood to maturity.

The Septimius Awards took place at Tuschinski, Amsterdam, on 19 and 20 August 2024.

The Septimius Awards is a prestigious ceremony that honours visionary films, finds and supports up-and-coming independent talent, and unites all aspects of filmmaking and storytelling, including scripts, fiction, non-fiction, animation, television shows, and scripts.Β

Mbatha took home two prizes from the 2024 Cultural and Creative Industries Awards (CCIA) earlier this year.

"I hardly win and I am terrible at this receiving thing, so please bear with me," she remarked after declaring her victory. I'm experiencing new emotions right now, like pure appreciation and pride. We frequently only honour the measurement system established by the West. But being acknowledged and respected by your OWN PEOPLE is the best feeling in the world. I'm adrift in an ocean of gratitude."
