Kfm Mornings speak to legendary rugby commentator Matthew Pearce ahead of the Springboks vs All Blacks match in Cape Town tomorrow, 7 September.

Kfm Mornings speak to legendary rugby commentator Matthew Pearce.

You might recognise rugby commentator Matthew Pearce more by his voice than by his face, but he's a legend either way.

A commentator's job is integral to a game and involves commentators working coherently together, knowing who to talk to and how to talk to them to provide the audience with instant, accurate and helpful explanations and analysis of the live match.

But what makes a legendary commentator? Pearce says it's all about being prepared.

Pearce prepares for big matches like Saturday's big game between the Springboks and New Zealand by researching facts... but not just any facts - unique facts that many people might not know. He also uses snippets of information from his exclusive interviews with players, captains and coaches to add depth to his commentary.

"It's about those little conversations you have in the passage with people... those little nuggets of information you get that you can bring into match-day commentating."
- Matthew Pearce, Rugby Commentator

Peace says while the Springboks are in a rebuilding phase, with added new young players, their depth is still unmatched which is 'scary' (in a good way).

He says no dips in performance dips are anticipated.

"My killer stat from last week is that we had six players in our 23 playing against New Zealand for the first time and five of those six were on the field in those final 20 minutes when we turned a point deficit into a three-point lead... there were only three members of the All Blacks squad facing the Springboks for the first time."
- Matthew Pearce, Rugby Commentator
"The depth of the team really is extraordinary right now and it doesn't look like changing anytime soon."
