6 weeks after dam collapses, Riverlands residents still without running water

CAPE TOWN - Residents of Riverlands are still without water, six weeks after dam collapses damaged water infrastructure and people's homes.

Surging floodwaters from four collapsed dams caused widespread damage in the town last month. 

More than 200 people were affected and some people’s homes were destroyed.

The municipality has been dispatching water tankers for residents in the area. 

Riverlands disaster steering committee member, Ralph Burger, said that work to restore the water supply in the town had already started.

Burger said the municipality had promised to have running water back as soon as possible.

"The water connection is not back on - they're talking about the 17th of October. The water line is going quick, and we thank the municipality for getting that underway so quickly," Burger said.

Burger said he hoped that the rebuilding of people's homes could also be fast-tracked.
