JOHANNESBURG - Rand Water said that Gauteng municipalities were facing an impending disaster due to critically low reservoirs.
It said that municipalities had withdrawn excessive levels of water, which had caused low water storage levels.
The water utility has urged municipalities to warn residents to reduce consumption to prevent a worst-case scenario.
"The situation is anticipated to worsen with the ongoing heatwave. Rand Water has repeatedly warned municipalities in Gauteng about this potential situation. Unfortunately, the situation we sought to prevent has now materialised," said spokesperson Makenosi Maroo.
