CAPE TOWN - The Eastern Cape Transport Department has threatened to take legal action against provincial taxi associations if they refuse to dissolve current executive leadership.
The associations include Santaco, Uncedo, Border Taxi Alliance, and EC Taxi Association.
This comes after seven people were shot and killed in taxi-related incidents between January and September 2024.
Calls to disband the executive are part of the recommendations taken in a meeting convened in September as an effort to mitigate taxi violence in the province.
The department said the current minibus taxi industry leadership had failed to resolve in-fighting among associations in the province.
Eastern Cape Transport spokesperson, Makhaya Komisa: "MEC is of the firm view that this process is part of the peace accord signed by the leaders of the industry and the department to end violence in the industry."
