The book highlights the garden's scientific significance as a vital repository of knowledge about South Africa's rich flora and showcases its numerous attractions.
"It's a century-long background to the establishment of Kirstenbosch, and another century has passed since then."
- Brian Huntley, Author and Conservationist
Originally published in 2012, the latest edition released on 1 September includes updated information on new developments and features, making it a treasured keepsake for visitors and the thousands of locals who visit each year.
Authored by Brian Huntley, the first Chief Executive of the National Botanical Institute, the book benefits from his extensive experience in conservation.
He notes that the garden, once primarily frequented by gardening enthusiasts and plant lovers, underwent a significant transformation between 1992 and 1993 with the introduction of garden concerts.
This shift doubled the number of visitors and attracted a new audience – families seeking outdoor activities, rather than just plant enthusiasts.
Consequently, the garden's facilities were upgraded, resulting in the vibrant space we see today.
"Kirstenbosch has always been a place of great contact with nature and the feeling of peace and tranquility and just being at harmony with the world."
- Brian Huntley, Author and Conservationist
