Bridget Mangwandi has made history in the MasterChef kitchen.
Not only is the 20-year-old South Africa's first black female MasterChef, after winning the fifth season of MasterChef SA, but she's also the youngest MasterChef in the franchise's history.
"It was something that I really worked so hard for and I'm so excited about what's next and what's going to happen, so it's really exciting to be even considered a chef..."
- Bridget Mangwandi, MasterChef SA Season 5 winner
"So many people are so encouraging and saying it's inspiring - that's exactly how I felt also watching other people do this and take these types of paths. To even be considered an inspiration, is wow, I am really honoured and grateful for this."
- Bridget Mangwandi, MasterChef SA Season 5 winner
During the show's finale, which aired on S3 on Saturday (23 November), the top two finalists were tasked with cooking up "a million-rand-worthy two-course meal showcasing African excellence and expressing their evolution from home cook to chef extraordinaire."
Mangwandi drew inspiration from her mother's favourite recipe, apricot chicken.
She adapted the recipe opting to use kingklip instead of chicken - a dish that sealed the deal with the judges.
In addition to winning the MasterChef title, she also walks away with a R1 million cash prize.
So, what's next for MasterChef Bridget Mangwandi?
"I'd really love to visit some cities and maybe do a little pop-up with a restaurant and get to have people try the type of food that I've been cooking on the show."
