CAPE TOWN - The search continues on Tuesday for a 34-year-old man caught by a rip current at Monwabisi Beach.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said the man was swept away while attempting to rescue a 12-year-old girl who was drowning.
After bringing the girl's body ashore, it’s believed the man got into difficulties before disappearing into the water.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the incident occurred over the weekend.
“The man and the girl that he had tried to rescue are not related. Condolences are conveyed to the family and friends of the deceased child. Police have opened an inquest docket. Thoughts, care, and compassion are with the family and friends of the missing man in this difficult time.”
