This change is meant to enhance security and streamline the payment process.

Lester Kiewit interviews SANRAL spokesperson Vusi Mona.

Listen below.

As of 1 December 2024, motorists can no longer swipe cards at South African toll gates.

This change is meant to enhance security and streamline the payment process.

As a result, the country is transitioning from traditional magstripe (swipe) payments to contactless tap functionality at toll gates.

"If you are using a magstripe-based card, it will not work."

- Vusi Mona, Spokesperson - SANRAL

Motorists now have several convenient payment options, including:

  • Tap-enabled debit or credit cards (Europay, Mastercard, Visa).
  • Contactless-enabled devices, such as smartphones and smartwatches linked to a virtual or physical card via payment apps like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay.
  • Cash payments or SANRAL tags.

The affected areas include the N3 toll route from Johannesburg to Durban, the N4 toll route from Pretoria to Komatipoort, and Chapman's Peak, along with surrounding areas.
