As December marks Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Tygerberg Hospital is on a drive to educate the public about skin (the body’s largest organ) protection.

CAPE TOWN - Skin experts at Tygerberg Hospital are warning that South Africa’s sunny climate increases the risk for skin cancer.

As December marks Skin Cancer Awareness Month, the hospital is on a drive to educate the public about skin (the body’s largest organ) protection.

Dr Barbara van der Westhuizen, a dermatologist at the hospital, says taking precaution is key.

“Seeking shade during the times of 10am and 3pm. Wearing protective clothing like rushy vests, long sleeve shirts, broad rim hats and sunglasses.”

She adds that sunscreen is crucial to protect one’s skin.

“And protecting yourself by wearing SPF (Sun Protections Factor) 50 or higher. And please remember to reapply every two to three hours as well as after sports activities and after swimming. “
