JOHANNESBURG - About 500 people were arrested in the Eastern Cape for breaking road regulations during the festive season.
The highest alcohol level in a driver nationwide in December was also recorded in the province.
It is understood that out of the hundreds of arrests, over 400 were for drinking and driving.
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport's spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said that they also recently apprehended a man who assaulted a female traffic officer.
"We also wish to take this moment to pay a special tribute to all the rapid response teams for working tirelessly during this period, saving lives and arresting people on drunk driving charges. It's no less than 500 people that have been arrested, and most recently they've arrested men for assaulting a female traffic officer on the N6 near Malitwa."
