JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling on the Gauteng government to support the agricultural sector in curbing high food costs. 

The party argues that the industry’s reported a 28.8% decline in its financial contribution to the country's GDP is due to the lack of government support.

The DA's member of the Gauteng Legislature Bronwynn Engelbrecht said the statistics are concerning because a weak agricultural sector impacts food security.

Engelbrecht added that farmers experience numerous challenges that make food more expensive.
