JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) vowed to challenge the newly signed expropriation law in court, deeming it a direct attack on the constitutional rights of South Africans.
According to DA national spokesperson, Willie Aucamp, the party has obtained a legal opinion that the Expropriation Bill is unconstitutional.
President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the new law on Thursday, stating it aligned with the country’s Constitution.
The act allows the state to expropriate property if it's in the public interest, but the DA argues that it undermines property rights and rule of law.
Aucamp said: "We will not stand by as the government seeks to undermine our rights and erode the rule of law. The Democratic Alliance will unpack our action plan and how we intend to hold government accountable for these reckless and unconstitutional moves."
DA leader, John Steenhuisen, will address the media on Saturday for a full reaction to the signing of this bill as well as the National Health Insurance (NHI).
