Budget Irish airline Ryanair charged a passenger £50 (about R1,154) to bring their water bottle onboard a flight to Dublin.

Writing to The Mirror, Ruby Flanagan says the airline’s baggage policy caught her out on a return flight.

Contrary to her flight into Dublin, her luggage was checked on the flight out.

A Ryanair worker pointed out that the reusable water bottle slung across her body would need to go in her bag.

However, placing the water bottle in the bag made it too big to fit under the seat so she needed to pay an additional fee.

“I was told that the water bottle needed to fit into the bag; otherwise, it would be classed as a ‘second bag’, which was not allowed with my ticket,” she wrote.

“I swelled by the width of a water bottle… It would of course have been cheaper to have chucked it and bought a new one on the other end.”
