In response to the DA, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has indicated that 100 cameras will be bought annually as this is all the department can afford at this stage.
The party's Mzamo Billy said implementation must be accelerated.
“We want to welcome this and see it as a positive step. We want to urge the minister and the South African police to prioritise the urgent implementation of this initiative by accelerating roll out.”
Billy added body cameras would help protect citizens, as well as police officers.
“The DA does believe that the use of body cameras is critical for enhancing transparency, accountability, and public trust in policing. We do believe that it is a vital tool to support police officers on the ground to avoid frivolous claims and lawsuits by malicious individuals.”
