JOHANNESBURG - A man accused of vandalising a government relocation housing project has been released on bail.

Opulence Mavuso made a brief appearance at the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Monday, where he was released on R500 bail.

It is alleged that on 26 February, Mavuso vandalised corrugated iron roof houses that were built to relocate residents from the Baghdad informal settlement in Salvokop, Pretoria.

Mavuso is one of the community leaders at the Baghdad informal settlement.

The settlement stands in the way of the multibillion-rand Salvokop precinct development.

Residents from Baghdad are opposed to being relocated in order for the project to continue.

On 26 February, Mavuso, along with EFF Tshwane PR councillor Odwa Nontununu, conducted an oversight inspection to the proposed relocation houses.

The houses are made of corrugated iron and have been described by the community as tin fish shacks.

Mavuso is accused of damaging some of the houses during the inspection.

The matter has been postponed to 2 April for further investigations.
